On Thursday April 19th, Mayor Greg Ballard expanded Indy’s smoking ban by signing a new ordinance that will cover most bars starting at 6am on June 1 (City-County Counsel OK’d the smoking ban on April 17th).  This goes even further than the recently enacted statewide smoking ban taking effect July 1, which exempts taverns.

The recently signed ordinance goes above and beyond the 2005 smoking ban for Indianapolis to include bars, bowling alleys and hotel rooms (expanding on restaurants and most workplaces).  Electronic cigarette devices are also included in the ban.  With this new ban, it is estimated that the number of workplaces that allows smoking to less than 60.

Another interesting fact about the signing of this smoking ban is the method used by Mayor Ballard.  Around 7pm on April 19th, the Mayor took to his twitter account to share the news to the citizens of Indianapolis.
